A Costa Brava campsite, rewritten for French travellers

Sector: campsite and bungalow park Source market: Spain Target market: France Audit score 5.5/10 - 6 zones rewritten
Audit finding

The page is written in correct French and says almost nothing a French traveller can verify. The audit records repetitive promotional phrasing without cultural anchoring, the absence of the Catalan classification and of any tourist-tax figure, and no French-language proof of any kind.

The audited campsite homepage as published: navigation, hero image and headline, with the campsite identity removed
The page as published, above the fold. Campsite name, logo and registration number removed. The audit examined the copy, not the photography.
The situation

A Spanish campsite selling to France in French

A campsite on the Costa Brava, open from late March to early October, publishing its homepage in several languages to reach the markets it depends on. France is the first of them. The French version exists and reads well. Nothing beyond the translation was done for that market.

The audit scored the page 5.5 out of 10 for a French traveller. Three critical frictions, quoted from the audit:

  • repetitive promotional phrasing without cultural anchoring
  • missing official Spanish classification and tourist tax transparency
  • lack of French-specific trust signals

Where the audit answers each of these:

What changed, and why

The rewritten copy is in French, and that is a rule rather than a coincidence. The campsite publishes its homepage in several languages. The audit rewrites a page in the language that page is written in, and uses the nationality only to decide what it should say. This one ran on the French version of the site, so both columns below are French.

Register

The word « Découvrez » opened three separate blocks; it now opens none. The audit lists excessive repetition of the verb ‘Discover’ among the things to demote, and ‘resort’ used without cultural justification. What replaces them is a position, not an invitation: a family campsite, away from the crowds, in a named region.

ZONE 2 / 6

Opening paragraph: who the campsite says it is

Before

Cultural fit

« Un lieu unique » becomes a claim that can be contradicted, which is what makes it worth reading. The audit removes vague statements like ‘connect with nature’ outright. Saying that there is no concrete and no overcrowding is a statement a visitor can check on arrival, and one a competitor cannot copy without lying.

Accommodation: bungalows and pitches

Before

Evidence

The same list, minus the superlative that carried no information. « Tout est pensé pour un séjour exceptionnel » goes; the sanitary access, which was nowhere on the page, arrives. The audit ranks a photograph of clean, well-lit restrooms with door width indicated as a high-priority missing shot for this market: the copy now makes a promise the photography has to keep.

ZONE 4 / 6

Family, activities and facilities

Before

Cultural fit

The activities were already free and already guided. What was missing was the reassurance that they are optional. The French profile arrives with a high tolerance for organised holiday life and a low tolerance for being enrolled in it. Naming both needs in one sentence is the adjustment; the offer itself is unchanged.

ZONE 5 / 6

Setting, beaches and surroundings

Before

Cultural fit

Named places replace the category they belonged to. The original offered « villages médiévaux » and « criques » as nouns. The rewrite names Cap Roig, Pals and Peratallada, and adds the fish market. The audit’s first promoted argument for this market is authenticity of the village and preservation of the natural setting: a proper noun is the cheapest available proof of it.

Trust

The registration number was already on the page. It was in the footer, between the GPS coordinates and the postcode. The audit asks to move it, not to invent it: tourist tax and registration number, currently buried in legal disclaimers in the footer, to be integrated into a Transparency section at the top of the page. Its reason is blunt: for this market it is an immediate validation criterion. The gift voucher, which occupied a block of its own, was cut as not relevant for long-term French trip planning.

After only Beyond the copy

Which photographs to lead with, and which are missing

There is no before to show here. The site presents its photographs in upload order, with no ordering for any particular market. The audit ranks the thirteen photographs already on the site against what a French traveller decides on, writes a caption for each, and lists the shots the campsite still has to take.

What leads, for this market: the coastal path, then the beach, then the accommodation. The audit puts the setting first and the product second, which is the reverse of the German order on the same set of photographs.
Coastal path through pines, blurred
The setting proves the claim of authenticity before any facility does.
Sandy beach, blurred
Position 2 Plage de sable fin de Calella de Palafrugell, préservée grâce à l’absence de construction. The caption does the arguing: preserved because nothing was built on it.
Wooden bungalows under pines, blurred
Accommodation arrives third here. For the German reader it arrives first.
One photograph is discarded by all three audits, for three different reasons. It is the black-and-white portrait of a child with a megaphone that sits in the season banner. The French audit rejects it as abstract, with no connection to the actual location or offering, perceived as artificial. The German one as adding no factual value. The Danish one as staged and disconnected from hygge or nature. Three cultures, one verdict, three arguments.

Shots the campsite needs to supply, in the audit’s own words

Staging. Two scenes are recommended, both to be really photographed on site: a French family picnicking under the pines with bread, local cheese and a bottle of Catalan wine, and a mixed group setting off on a guided hike with a local guide, backpack and paper map. The audit gives the reason for the first in one line: it legitimises the choice of holiday socially, by way of the local table.
After only Second deliverable

What the audit asks the campsite for

Rewriting a page is half the job. The other half is naming what the page cannot say because nobody has supplied it. The audit closes on what it cannot write itself. Three items are requested from the operator, because no amount of rewriting can invent them.

High priority - the official classification

The campsite’s classification under the Generalitat de Catalunya, star rating or regional equivalent.

French travellers interpret a star as a verified guarantee. Without the explanation, the audit notes, they suspect it is self-declared.

High priority - the full price grid

Complete grid by accommodation type, season and duration, all taxes included except the tourist tax.

The audit ties this to the market’s uncertainty avoidance: this traveller must be able to calculate the total budget before booking, and will not write to ask for a price.

Medium priority - proof in French

Reviews written in French, or a mention in a French guide such as Le Routard.

Peer validation in the reader’s own language is a decision filter, not a decoration.
